About us

Sixty-three years of second chances

The Washington Literacy Center is a DC nonprofit that has taught adults to read, write, count and navigate the modern workplace since 1963. Our learners are adults historically underserved by traditional education — many from Wards 7 and 8, many unemployed or underemployed, many returning citizens — and we meet them where they are.

Small-group instruction, CASAS-assessed progress, industry certifications, and a staff that stays with each learner from the first class to the first job. Established in 1963; a 501(c)(3) since 1965 (EIN 52-6063003).

"To raise the literacy level of adults in Washington, DC such that they may function on the job, in the family and in society." — the mission as filed

  • One-page rebuild of washlit.org (Wix). Every program, number, name, date and link comes from their own pages or the FY2024 Form 990; nothing invented. Program naming on their site is inconsistent (Pathways to Purpose / Progress / JumpStart 2 Success) — this page uses "Pathways to Purpose (formerly JumpStart 2 Success)"; confirm with WLC.
  • Integrations kept as outbound links exactly as they use them: Pledge (donate), Imperisoft (enroll), Formstack (LSFL application), FlipHTML5 (newsletter). Nothing loads from them — no embeds, no scripts.
  • Volunteer page on the live site turns volunteers away; the card here says "currently full" and offers a wait-list by email. Confirm the desired state.
  • Photos are CC0 stand-ins (orange books, classroom, Gallaudet statue, Capitol). Their LSFL graduation photos and learner portraits are the real material — ask for originals.
